An Ancient Beauty Secret
Tallow was first used for skincare as far back as ancient civilisations like the Egyptians, Romans, and Babylonians, who blended animal fats with herbs and oils to create balms for protection and healing. Archaeological evidence from the Bronze Age shows a 2,700-year-old face cream made from beef tallow.
Indigenous cultures across North America and Australia traditionally relied on tallow-based ointments for various purposes, including wound healing, sun protection, and hydration. They valued its natural barrier properties against extreme weather conditions.
Ethnographic evidence highlights the long-standing use of animal fats in therapeutic skincare and wound treatment. Historically, Samburu pastoralists in Kenya used animal-derived fats to treat dermal infections. In Roman antiquity, tallow and ash were integral to early soap-making in the vicinity of Mount Sapo.

Where does your beef tallow come from?
Our grass-fed, grass-finished beef tallow is a by-product of our family-run farm located on the Atherton Tablelands in Australia. We also source tallow from other ethical farms in Far North Queensland. By knowing the animals and producers, we maintain a connection that ensures we use only premium, grass-fed tallow for our products.
What is tallow and how is it used in skincare?
Tallow is a type of rendered fat, traditionally obtained from cattle. It is commonly used in various skincare products because of its compatibility with human skin oils. It is rich in essential nutrients, including vitamins A, D, E, and K, which provide deep hydration and help maintain a healthy skin barrier. Tallow is particularly effective at nourishing and moisturising the skin, making it a popular choice in natural skincare formulations.
Does tallow smell like meat?
No. Our unique rendering process ensures that our tallow skincare products have a neutral, earthy aroma and eliminate any beefy smell. We infuse our products with organic essential oils to create a delightful fragrance that you’ll love.
Is tallow suitable for all skin types?
Yes, tallow is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Its natural composition is gentle and free from synthetic additives, making it safe for even the most delicate skin. Tallow’s unique fatty acid profile helps balance skin oils, benefiting both dry and oily skin types. Additionally, it is hypoallergenic, making it a preferred choice for individuals with skin sensitivities or conditions such as eczema.
How does tallow compare to other skincare oils and butters?
Tallow is unique because its fatty acid profile closely resembles that of human skin, making it highly absorbent and practical for enhancing skin health. In contrast to some plant-based oils and butters, tallow is generally more stable. It has a longer shelf life due to its saturated fat content. This stability reduces the risk of oxidation and rancidity, allowing it to maintain its benefits and effectiveness over time.
Can tallow irritate or clog my skin?
Tallow is classified as comedogenic, which means it can clog pores and potentially worsen acne, particularly for individuals with oily or acne-prone skin. Those with sensitive skin may experience reactions or irritation, so it’s important to conduct a patch test beforehand. Additionally, anyone with a known allergy to beef or animal-derived ingredients should avoid using tallow.
What should I do if I get an allergic reaction?
Pay close attention to how your skin reacts, and discontinue use if you experience an allergic reaction. As with all cosmetic products, you should always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying it to your face or larger areas. The risk of irritation can vary based on several factors, including your specific skin type and the other ingredients in the product. Be mindful of these ingredients; check for potential irritants, such as essential oils and fragrances. If you get a reaction, the best thing to do is book a consultation with a doctor.
